Keith Richards stars in 'Origin of the Species' documentary & curates BBC shows ...

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is starring in a BBC2 documentary about his early years titled "Keith Richards – The Origin of the Species," directed by Julien Temple, according to the Guardian. Meanwhile, Richards is curating a "'lost weekend' of films and live performances for BBC4" featuring "two nights of shows hand-picked by the man himself, the first time the BBC4 schedules have been taken over in this way," reports the Guardian. The programming (which will be televised
The Guardian quotes Richards as saying in the documentary: "There was a feeling in the late ‘50s/early ‘60s that there was a change coming. Harold Macmillan actually said it: ‘The winds of change’ and all that, but he didn’t mean it in quite the same way. I certainly felt that my generation and what was happening and the feeling in the air was it’s time to push limits. The world is ours now and you can rise or fall on it."
This isn't the first time that Richards has been the subject of a nonfiction film directed by a well-known filmmaker. Richards was the subject of the Netflix documentary "Keith Richards: Under the Influence" (directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville), which premiered in September 2015. Johnny Depp also directed a documentary about Richards that was filmed mostly in 2010. Depp said in interviews that the untitled movie was completed, but no plans have been announced for the documentary to have a premiere or a release.

Rolling Stones' 'Exhibitionism' moves to New York City in November 2016 ...

The Rolling Stones' multimedia memorabilia event Exhibitionism is coming to New York City in November 2016 (opening date to be announced), after the event ends its stint in London.
Here's the official announcement:
The Rolling Stones’ first ever major exhibition, Exhibitionism, delivered by DHL, will make its North American debut in New York City in November. Following its star-studded opening in London, which garnered rave reviews and drew huge crowds, Exhibitionism, will come across the pond to the iconic Industria Superstudio (775 Washington Street) in the West Village. Exhibitionism is the largest touring experience of its kind ever to be staged, and the first time in history the band has unlocked their vast private archive.
Exhibitionism tells the story of the most influential rock ‘n’ roll band in the world, allowing visitors to experience their incredible journey from their early days living together in a tiny flat to headlining the biggest stages in the world.
Originated and produced by Australian-based iEC Exhibitions! with the full participation of Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie, and curated by New York native Ileen Gallagher, this highly immersive and interactive exhibition explores the Stones’ extraordinary career with over 500 rare items. From their most cherished instruments, onstage and off stage clothes, valuable works of art and handwritten lyric books to personal diaries, recordings, unseen film and photos, a screening cinema and interactive recording studio that all culminates in an exciting and powerful backstage-to-onstage 3D concert experience.
“We've been thinking about this for quite a long time but we wanted it to be just right and on a large scale,” said Mick. “It’s not going to be like walking into a museum. It’s going to be an event, an experience. It’s about a sense of The Rolling Stones – it’s something we want people to go away talking about it.”
“While this is about the Rolling Stones, it's not necessarily only just about us,” said Keith. “It’s also about all the paraphernalia and technology associated with a group like us, and it’s this, as well as the instruments that have passed through our hands over the years, that should make the exhibition unforgettable.”
Over the past 50 years, The Rolling Stones became, and have remained, one of the most culturally important acts in history. From the daring white dress worn by Mick Jagger in 1969, to the seminal Sticky Fingers (1971) album cover and iconic tongue and lips logo, the Rolling Stones have continued to break the boundaries of cultural norms over their incredible career.
“This was such a unique opportunity to collaborate with the band and get their insights into the project,” said curator Ileen Gallagher. “The quotes on the wall and all of the text in the exhibition is in the voice of the band or people who work very closely with them. You’re actually having the band tell you what happened at the time.”
The original works of key collaborators who helped to make the band not just musical but cultural icons are also on show, including Andy Warhol, John Pasche, who designed the band’s iconic tongue logo, fashion designers Ossie Clark and Alexander McQueen, artist Shepard Fairey, producer Don Was, and film director Martin Scorsese.
Exhibitionism gives visitors a look back at the high points of the band’s career through a new film, with a high-octane soundtrack. It then steps back into the early days, to an amazing recreation of the Edith Grove flat that Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones shared in 1962. The flat was located just off the King’s Road in London’s Chelsea neighborhood.
There is a recreation of a Stones recording studio complete with their original instruments, plus a “backstage” area to give fans a sense of what it truly feels like just before the band heads out on stage. A guitar gallery brings together examples of some of Keith, Ronnie and Mick’s prized instruments, including a rosewood Fender Telecaster and a Maton that Keith played on Let It Bleed, which famously disintegrated as he reached the final notes of "Gimme Shelter."
Other unique items include the cassette player on which Keith famously sketched out the idea for "(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction," just before falling asleep in a Florida motel room, Mick Jagger’s lyric book which features the hand written words for "Miss You," "Hey Negrita" and "Worried About You," Keith Richards' 1963 diary, and the toy drum kit that Charlie Watts used in the recording of "Street Fighting Man."
Exhibitionism is the ultimate experience for Rolling Stones fans but also for anyone interested in art and design, fashion, film and the artistry of music. The size and scale of Exhibitionism is unprecedented, and required a very large and unique venue space,” said iEC Exhibitions! founding director and managing partner Thea Jeanes-Cochrane.
Exhibitionism is the largest touring experience of its kind to be staged by any band or artist, and continues the Stones’ proud tradition of ground-breaking innovation combined with the highest production values.
Tickets for New York will go on sale to the general public in September. Register at stonesexhibitionism.com to be the first to receive more details.
DHL are the Presenting and Official Logistics Partner of Exhibitionism. As the world’s most international company, DHL will use the power of its global network to transport Exhibitionism to New York and beyond. DHL CEO Ken Allen said, “delivering over 500 rare and priceless artifacts on behalf of the band is both an honor and recognition of the company’s worldwide expertise. We’re truly delighted to play the dream role of ‘roadies’ and bring Exhibitionism to the fans.”
Jackson National Life Insurance (Jackson), a leading provider of retirement products, will serve as the official U.S. Sponsor. “For Jackson, sponsoring the exhibit is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of the creative and age-defying journey of true rock-and-roll legends,” said Barry Stowe, chairman of Jackson. “By embracing the living legacy of the Rolling Stones, Jackson can connect on a deep emotional level with a generation that is defined by these very ideals. The Baby Boomers helped to usher in one of the most powerful eras of change and disruption in music, culture and philosophy. As a company focused on helping Baby Boomers plan for the next phase of their lives, we are pleased to be able to bring to North America this world-class exhibit focused on an artistic and cultural phenomenon that helped define and shape a generation."
The Rolling Stones officially opened Exhibitionism, delivered by DHL, on April 5 at London’s Saatchi Gallery. It will run in London through September 4. Giving it a four-star review, The Daily Telegraph called it “The most magnificent multi-sensory barrage of Stones 'stuff' you’re ever likely to encounter.” The Guardian exclaimed it as “genuinely jaw-dropping,” with the Daily Mail adding that it is “The most comprehensive and immersive insight into the band's fascinating fifty-year history.” Tickets for the London exhibition are on sale now at www.stonesexhibitionism.com.

Keith Richards Among Top Musicians Affected By Twitter Hacks...

It became evident that the rockers had lost control of their social media accounts on Sunday (05Jun16) after a series of bizarre tweets appeared on their timelines.
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith's biography on his official account was changed to the sentence, "i hacked this ugly cancerous man hahahahahah (sic) follow @factor" and the hacker sent threats promising to bomb aircraft belonging to Malaysia Airlines and JetBlue Airways.
"I love killing people and blowing s**t up lmaooooo ima bomb @jetblue ahahaha (sic)," one read.
After regaining control of the social media feed on Sunday evening, representatives of the 72-year-old musician wrote, "Earlier today Keith’s Twitter account was hacked along with other verified accounts. The hateful tweets that were posted have been removed."
The account of Australian rockers Tame Impala was also compromised, with similar threats being issued from it towards American carrier JetBlue.
"I have 15 C4s in my bag and 12 pipebombs in my bag also. I'm going to blow up one of your planes in 30 minutes!! @Jetblue," one read.
Fellow indie rock band Bon Iver also suffered the indignity of losing control of their official Twitter feed, with their account sending out an offensive post about the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who died aged 74 on Friday (03Jun16).
"I'm so glad Muhammad Ali ahahahahahah," the tweet read. The band's Twitter handle was also changed to @Ihavelegcancer by the hacker.
"Very sorry, everyone. We were hacked. Trying to fix the account now. Stand by," the group wrote on Twitter after the incident.
Earlier on Sunday (05Jun16) the Twitter account of the comedy rock duo Tenacious D was compromised, with a hacker falsely announcing the death of bandmember and actor Jack Black.
Reality TV star Kylie Jenner and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg were also among victims of the series of attacks on stars' social media accounts over the weekend (04-05Jun16).
At the time of WENN going to press, it was not known if all the cyber-attacks were the work of a group or individuals.

New Film to Focus on Rolling Stones’ ‘Exile on Main St.’ Sessions...

The Rolling Stones are no strangers to the cinema format. Forget all the times Martin Scorsese used their music to give his similarly violent, erotic, and insidious imagery a little extra gasoline. Just think about the line of documentaries that have been made on the career of arguably the greatest rock & roll band in the history of time. The Maysles brothers  captured the band’s infectious energy, and the fractious culture they came to represent, in Gimme Shelter, most famously, but then there’s similarly striking works like Charlie Is My Darling, Cocksucker Blues, and Crossfire Hurricane that chronicle the band’s creative process. Heck, even Scorsese jumped on the train and directed a concert film for the band, namely Shine a Light.
rolling-stones-mick-jaggerNow, the band will seemingly be given the full-tilt narrative treatment with an upcoming movie about the making of one of their very best records, Exile on Main St. The film will be directed by Andy Goddard, who has been a major creative force on the BBC’s Downton Abbey, and has helmed some of that series’ most evocative and challenging episodes. Deadline reports that the title of the film will be Exile on Main Street: A Season in Hell with The Rolling Stones, based on Robert Greenfield‘s book about the long-running band, with Brandon and Philip Murphy writing the script for the film. The movie will hopefully begin shooting later this year, and the roles of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are being cast right now.

Mind you, the French summer of 1971, wherein the Stones recorded Exile on Main St., has been covered before in Stones in Exile, Stephen Kijak‘s fleet-footed, pretty fantastic documentary about the recording sessions. Kijak, who has also directed a doc on the iconic Scott Walker, gave a full sense of the personal ruptures, addictions, and strife that went into the chaotic but ultimately intensely fruitful sessions that yielded the record, and one hopes Goddard, who has also directed for Daredevil, will similarly get a sense of the creative bedlam. Still, the major draw of the project will be in seeing how performers get under the skins of Jagger and Richards, as well as the rest of the legendary band and their extensive entourage. Fingers crossed neither of them are played by Douglas Booth.

Chuck Leavell To Join David Gilmour Band For Upcoming Tour ...

Famed Rolling Stones/Allman Brothers Band keyboardist Chuck Leavell has been added to Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour‘s backing band for an upcoming European Tour. The run in support of Rattle That Lock begins with a show in Wroclaw, Poland on June 25 where Gilmour and his band will perform with a 30-piece orchestra and ends with two nights in Tienen, Belgium on July 27 – 28.
Chuck Leavell wrote a post for his website detailing his connection with Gilmour:
I was pleased and surprised to be contacted by David (Gilmour) a couple of months ago asking me if I would be available to tour with him in June and July. My first contact with David was back in 1984 when I was the Musical Director of a show broadcast on MTV called “Guitar Greats”. David was a part of that, and he was amazing. Then a few years later when I was with Eric Clapton, David invited me and some of the other members of the band to his home where we had a memorable night talking about music and life in general. To have him reach out to me now is truly an honor, and I can’t wait to start work with him and the band. My good friend, Greg Phillinganes, who I was honored to work with during some of my Clapton days will also be playing keyboards on the tour and I look forward to “tag teaming” with him again. The timing for this is perfect, as the Stones will gear up again for our “Desert Trip” shows and some other activity in September and October. So this is proving to be an extraordinary year for me! – Chuck Leavell

Eric Clapton Joins The Rolling Stones To Collaborate On New Album...

The iconic band are on a break from touring after ending a trek across Latin America with a historic gig in Cuba in March (16), and have been working on new material with American producer Don Was at a recording studio in Chiswick, West London.
The rockers then bumped into the guitarist, 71, who was recording in the studio next door and asked him to join them for a jam which reportedly produced two new tracks.
“Eric was in the next studio along so he came in to say hello," a source tells British newspaper The Sun. “They ended up jamming and recorded two songs. Don reckons it’s the best thing he has ever done with the Stones.”
The reported collaboration will not be the first time Eric has worked with the iconic group fronted by Mick Jagger; last year (15) a previously unreleased version of the Stones' 1971 hit Brown Sugar featuring Eric on guitar emerged.
He has also performed the blues track which took The Rolling Stones to the top of the U.K. charts in 1964, Little Red Rooster, at gigs alongside bandmembers Mick, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood.
The new collaboration will be the first time they have recorded new music together however.
According to the insider, the Stones are planning to return to the studio very soon to continue work on their new record.
“They have decided to go back in the studio later this month because they are enjoying it so much,” the source adds.
However, 68-year-old Ronnie will have to fit his recording schedule around his responsibilities as a new father, as his wife Sally, 38, gave birth to twin girls Gracie Jane and Alice Rose on Monday (30May16).
